And Turkey Was His Name-O

Turkey Day is almost here!  For those of you who are still in school next week, we have a fun FREE activity for you.

Based on the song, Bingo, here is a new version for a turkey:
There was a bird
Who said Gobble Gobble
And turkey was his name-o.
T  u  r  k  e  y
T  u  r  k  e  y
T  u  r  k  e  y
And turkey was his name-o.

We write the lines on 7 sentence strips and put them in a pocket chart to follow along as we sing:
While singing the second verse, the children clap for the “T” rather than sing it.  To help them remember, we put clip art of clapping hands in the pocket in front of the “T.”
We continue with this procedure, adding another set of clapping hands for each verse sung.
By the end, all the letters are covered and the children clap for all of them.  A great exercise in self-control!

Need any last minute Thanksgiving projects?  Choose from our 6 products that are on sale Nov. 16 - 19.  Click on the title to read more about each one.

The sale ends on Saturday, Nov. 19th. Be sure to follow our blog and our store for notices about future sales!

Happy  Thanksgiving!

November Freebie and a Giveaway Contest!

We are joining our friends at I Teach K-2 Bloggers for great Thanksgiving freebies and a giveaway!

November is a perfect time to teach Long Ago and Present Time for your social studies curriculum.  Get our freebie with all the photos and wording you’ll need to create the following graph. Included are two sets of clip art, one a little larger for bigger chart paper.
We talk about one area a day using the book The Pilgrims’ First Thanksgiving by Ann McGovern and Friendship’s First Thanksgiving by William Accorsi.

On day 1 we discuss who the pilgrims were and what they wore.  On Day 2 we discuss how they traveled from England to America and how we travel now.  Day 3 brings a comparison of their houses to ours.  We joke with the children on day 4 about how the pilgrims went to the grocery store to get their food!  We have to discuss growing food since we teach in a urban area and our students are not exposed to fields of corn and wheat!  On the last day we talk about what the pilgrims did on the First Thanksgiving and what we will do on the holiday.
Each day we let the children select the photo they think they need for Long Ago and Present Time.  Laminate the clip art first and use it year after year.
Be sure to get this freebie by clicking on this photo:
Each set of clip art also corresponds to a page in our KinderLit book, My Thanksgiving Book, so after we do our group lesson, the children collage that page in their own books. In 5 days the children have grasped the concept of Long Ago and Present Time as well as Thanksgiving!
