Stop by our store and stock up for second semester!

Clear Colored Acetate Sheets
Lisa: Have you tried these colored acetate sheets with your pocket chart sentences?  My students love trying to find the word of the day and cover it up with a piece of these sheets.

In this picture, you can see that I took 2 extra copies of Look At Me, an emergent reader from our reading program, and mounded and laminated the pages on construction paper.  I wrote the sentences on strips for the pocket chart so that the children could cover the word “look” with the acetate sheets.

At this reading station they can also select one sentence to rewrite on a paper as well as use a pointer to read the sentences to each other.

Play Dough and Common Core
Linda: We have always tried to keep the fun in kindergarten, even with CCSS.  Twenty years ago we had a play dough station with cookie cutters, rollers, and scissors.  Now we are required to tie everything in to a standard so our play dough is used for making words!

The play dough in these photos is from Lakeshore and has very vibrant colors.  The children used our letter cookie cutters to make the color words at a reading station.  Our school purchased tubs of this play dough but it’s very expensive! Click here for information on this play dough.

I like to make my own play dough which takes about 15 minutes but it lasts for months and months!  My grandkids are playing with a batch now that I made back in May of 2015.  Here’s how you do it:

Put 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup salt, and 2 T. cream of tartar into a saucepan.

Stir in 2 T. of cream of tartar.
Measure 1 cup of water and add 1 T. oil and food coloring to it.
Pour the liquid into the flour mixture in the saucepan.  It will look like too much liquid!  Don't worry - it cooks down!
Cook on medium heat, stirring constantly for about 3 - 5 minutes.
When the play dough sticks together, remove it from the heat.
Put it on a cutting board and wait for about a minute til it's cool enough to knead until it's smooth.
You can store it in covered plastic containers and use it over and over.  The children can cut it with scissors and they do not get sticky play dough on the blades!

Next Monday, Jan. 18th, our country will be honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. and his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement.  He is well-known for his speech, I Have a Dream, and in our classrooms we discuss what dreams we have for our country.  We have many students from other countries and each has his/her own dream for living in the USA.

Once we make our KinderLit One-and-Done project, we hang them in our classroom windows to show the other students walking by what our dreams are!  We get many compliments from teachers and upper grade students!

The KinderLit Shopping Cart

You may not have know, but Lisa and I started in business in 2000 with our own website and shopping cart.  Many of you have been very loyal customers and we thank you!  But the time has come to give up our shopping cart and have only one store at Teachers Pay Teachers.  If you have never been at that store, it has all the same products as on our own cart along with many freebies!  We still have our own website with lots of information about KinderLit and the Store link will take you to our TpT store.
Stop by and take a look! And don't forget to follow us on Pinterest and FaceBook through the links above.
